Sandwiches & Ice Cream

Went to Mendocino Farms across from The Grove with my cousin last week. We wanted to go to Joan's On 3rd but that crazy line and no parking just didn't fit into our schedule. I got a bag of sweet potato chips that were okay. She didn't like them. I also got a steak BLT that was the goodness and she got a chicken sandwich that was good. Not sure how much she liked this place but I know she liked my sandwich. I gave her half because I'm a nice person sometimes. Then of course we went to Carmela which is our thing now. I got an Aztec chocolate and she got the usual. Good times!

At Vee's With Cam

Today Cam and I went to Vee's Cafe off of Adams. When we got there no one was in probably because of this crazy ass wind we've been having the last few days. I hadn't been there for a while but each time I've gone have really liked this place. We both got the Hauser Scramble which is eggs, corn, cheese, and black beans which I did not get because I do not like beans. Deal with it. We also got drinks. She got a coffee of some sort that she loves and I tried the hot vanilla for the first time and really liked it. Few more people came by the time we were leaving but I like this place when it isn't busy.

More Lots Of Food

A few weeks ago Heidi came to visit so we headed to Plan Check since she'd never been before. We got the candied bacon burgers and of course their fried chicken. That has become a regular thing now. About a week or so ago I met up with H. and B. and went to Marix over here. I'd never been there before or knew it actually existed. I got guacamole and chips that were good and shrimp fajitas with lemonade. Then last week I hung with JP and we had some Thanksgiving leftovers and then headed to Carmela's because she is addicted. We got the pumpkin pie ice cream and I'll be damned if it wasn't some of the best ice cream I've ever had.

Solo Dolo Bomb Ass Thanksgiving Dinner

Today is Thanksgiving so that meant I had three choices. Go to see my family, not doing anything, or make my own dinner. I choose to make my own dinner and I am so happy that I did. I am sitting here with my whiskey and Coke with a belly full of food I made myself and I am so damned happy. And thankful. There is that.

I made my ham that is coated with Coke and brown sugar. This is an automatic for me. If I am making a big dinner this has to be a part of it. No crazy stuff involved. Just the sugar and soda being basted on the ham as it cooks. And it is massive. Probably the biggest I've ever made at around 12 pounds. Also included is my stuffing which I am always happy to make. I used the perfect amount of sage for it. Its enough for about six people but its all mine. Mine!

I usually make a cheesecake but this time I decided to make homemade cranberry sauce for the first time. So easy! Just check out Thug Kitchen's recipe. Cam sent it to me a few weeks ago and I was excited to try it out. I added a tiny bit more brown sugar because real cranberries are mad tart. I also made a lemon cake with whipped cheesecake frosting. Its safe to say that I will be eating ham for the next week and a half or so. Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving.

Lazy Fat Blogger

I have been such a bum the last month or so and not posting when I went somewhere to eat. On Halloween hanging out with my awesome cousin JP we headed to Continental Kitchen and some some bacon burgers and fries. Great as always. I headed to Penguin's with Cam after a shopping adventure because we hadn't been there in a minute. Love that place. With Koko we went to Mel's on Hollywood in between movies at the AFI film festival. Good food. Last week me and my cousin Mala went to Plan Check on Fairfax after shopping. We got a burger and their amazing fried chicken. She said hers had too much fat but it was still super tasty. Cool ass waiter, too.

Grub & Carmela's

JP and me went to Grub again and they were open! Yay! We tried to head to Son Of A Gun but the parking over there was just horrible so we went to Grub and found parking pretty damned fast. Even though it was busy we were able to grab a seat quickly. On weekends they have a brunch menu so we got our brunch on.

JP got the chorizo burrito with sour cream and guacamole on the side. We each got a side of crack bacon. I got this monster ass pancake and then left some of it at the place! Argh!!! It was a big pancake with bacon inside, with cheese on top, and syrup. Yeah. I know. Sounds terrible. But it was so good! It shouldn't have been but it was! JP agreed. After coming back to my place and laughing for hours and recording a show we headed to Carmela's for ice cream! This was such a fun day! You don't even know!

Continental Kitchen & Chili's

Last Friday before the Florence & The Machine concert Cam and I swung by Continental Kitchen. I love this place. They are always good. Always. Cam got a turkey burger with fries and a ginger soda while I got a classic burger with bacon, fries, and a Snapple. It was a really good night started with bellies full of awesome.

Sunday we went to Chili's in Simi Valley after seeing the new baby. We had a few choices and picked this. The nachos with guacamole were good and I really liked my burger with onions and bacon. Cam was not a fan of her turkey burger. We're gonna have to get a do-over for her. Oh, and I got the strawberry lemonade which was really good. They have this newfangled thing where you pay at the table with a credit card machine. It was weird.

Bollini's in Monteray Park

Last weekend I went to Bollini's in Monteray Park with Cam and two of her friends and a mama. I had never heard of or been to this place before. This was at the end of a busy day of being a professional passenger so by the time it was time to eat I was good and ready. There would be no leftovers for me this day.

We started with a pizza that was split in half. One side I forget what it had but the other had shrimp. Both were good but I would have liked the pizza more without the tail of the shrimp being on it still. It was like bite, pull out shrimp, put tail on plate, continue eating.

For the main course I got a chicken dish that was just too damned good. It also had mashed potatoes and spinach. I gave the spinach to Cam. I don't mess with that stuff. The amount was huge and sliced perfectly for eating. I let everyone have a piece because for as many times as they had been here none of them had ever tried it. It also had mushrooms on top that were super soft. If I am ever over in this area I'd love to go again.

More Bludso's

Last week I went to Bludso's once again with a different cousin. This time it was Mala and she had not been before. We ended up getting the rib tips, beef brisket, potato salad, collard greens, cornbread, and macaroni. To drink I got the sweet tea which was really good.

Mala thought the collard greens were too spicy but I don't eat those so I cant tell you. Otherwise we both liked the food and she plans on going back again. I like that every time I go to this place the food is good and the staff is nice. We had a distractingly hot waitress that liked my Bob Ross shirt. Next time I go I am going to take some dessert to go and some extra chicken. I cant just keep on getting beef items every damned time.

Fried Chicken At Plan Check

Today JP and I went to Grub and they were closed. The end. Seriously, we headed there and they were closed until 5pm so we were gonna head to Bludso's but then I suggested Stout but JP had already been there before so then I remembered that Plan Check is supposed to have bomb ass fried chicken so we went there instead. I am currently drinking apple moonshine from BevMo so forgive any nonsense in this post, yes?

Parking was easy and we found a spot pretty fast. We got a nice seat and ordered our food. For a drink I got a mango soda that was pretty damned good. For food I decided that we were gonna get some of everything and split it. We got fries, a Chef Burger that has the fried cheese, bacon, and ketchup leather. For the first time I tried the pastrami sandwich which had everything pastrami does but...better. Then we got the fried chicken. It is a lot. Sits on a bed of yam preserve and some really good milk gravy. We left the pickled okra out. When I say this is some of the best fried chicken I've ever had that made JP dance in her chair I am not lying.

Back At Bludso's

Cam and I headed to Bludso's once again and this place is great. We went to the one off of La Brea past Melrose. At first I thought it was closed because there was no one on the outside patio area. Turns out they were all inside, the place was packed, watching football and blasting music. We got the area all to ourselves the entire meal and started off with some Allagash White.

For the meal I got the beef brisket which was son tender I didn't really need my knife. It was just...damn. Cam got the chicken link that was spicy and wrapped that sumbitch in a slice of bread and enjoyed it a lot. For sides we got macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and potato salad. It was such a nice, chill lunch. Our server was cool and funny. I really like this place and need to go more often.

Belcampo On 3rd

JP and I went to this place called Belcampo on 3rd St. I had never heard of this place but she had from a burger festival she had gone to this year. This place is hidden very well if they don't want business. I'm doing this review in the classic style to give a better idea of what this spot was like.

Atmosphere. Dull. They have good music though. Very small stools to sit on with no privacy whatsoever. No booths. Just really tiny, unstable tables where both plates and the bowl take up most of it.

Grub For Crack Bacon

JP and I hung out yesterday and we went to this place called Grub over on Santa Monica and Seward. Its kind of a weird spot because there are nothing but studios nearby and its on a quiet little side street. She had mentioned this place a while back so we headed there.

Parking was easy enough because we found a spot right near it. We sat outside for a moment until I heard a couple ask to be seated inside because of flies. I was like “Hell no” and asked to be seated inside as well. One thing you must know: it will take a while to get your food. I would bitch more about it if the food wasn't so good.

Traffic, Burgers, And Jicama

Here's what happened. Dashuh was here visiting and the plan was to get to Anaheim, hang out, and then bring my ass back home. It should have been a total of about five hours that turned into a mess and a half. I took the bus to Union Station which was easy. But once you get off there are signs, people, and no help everywhere. The signs make no sense. Employees hide in plain site. Its a nightmare.

After four minutes I get my ticket to board a train heading to Anaheim. I ask where to go and am given the wrong information. So while I wait for my train that I think is late it is actually on the other side of the tracks on time and leaving. After realizing that not only was I now late I had wasted $8 on a piece of paper. I could wait another hour for the next one but when I decide to do something stupid I do it fast. So I head out front and hop into a cab.

Continental Kitchen Treat Yo Self!

Went to Continental Kitchen again this morning. God, I love this place. Its in West Hollywood right on Santa Monica across from Connie & Ted's. I decided to get the bleu cheese burger with bacon added because sometimes you need to treat yo self! This thing was so damned good. I like taking friends here for the first time and out of four people none have been disappointed.

I also got these Bruce Cost ginger ale drinks. One pomegranate and the other passion fruit. Both are really good but don't kick my mouth ass like ginger ale tend to. The passion fruit was really good.

Back To Vee's

Cam and I went to Vee's over on Adams Blvd this past weekend. We'd gone once before after hiking a while back and it was really good. It was good this time but, damn, they really need to work on their customer service. Was the place busy Yeah, when we first arrived. But by the time we were halfway through it wasn't and it took almost half an hour to get our check.

There was no communication between the staff. One person came and asked if we wanted our stuff boxed. Later someone came and handed us the receipt as if we'd paid already. We hadn't. He sighed, complained, and about ten minutes later they distracted our waitress long enough to let her know. I told Cam that we needed to just head up front and pay or else wait another half an hour. Our sandwiches were good as well as the potatoes. I got a spicy chicken one but they were out of the panini bread that was supposed to be on it. Again, really good food but it'd probably be better to just pick it up instead of eating there.

ShopHouse Again

After Cam and I saw the movie Far From The Madding Crowd we headed to ShopHouse. She got the chicken with papaya salad dish and enjoyed it.

I got the beef with medium curry and charred corn. It was really good and always lasts two meals for me.

Random Food

I've gone to a lot of places in the last month and have not been keeping track of them well so I decided to chuck them all into one post. First is Continental Kitchen. I got a good Philly Steak Sandwich and KP got their veggie wrap.

Chocolate Martinis At Arclight

A couple of weeks ago KP and I went to the Arclight over on Sunset to watch Furious 7. Awesome film by the way. Before we went in we had a couple of drinks. Not, like, two each though I have been known to do that. We got the chocolate martinis and these things are just too good. I could have easily had three of these and then be carried to my seat afterward. The bartender was cool and brought our drinks over to us even though it was getting busy there. This is one of the best things about being an adult. Getting drunk and seeing a movie.

Getty Villa Burger

A couple of days ago KP and I went to the Getty Villa and it was a perfect day to head there. It had rained the previous night so it was clear and sunny. While there we got the hunger and saw that they had a cafe. Turns out it was more than just coffee and pastries like I assumed. They had for reals food. We headed there and both of us got the Villa Burger. KP got hers with no candied bacon. I checked their website menu and this is how they listed the ingredients. “Meyer Angus Beef, Crispy Onions Port Wine Reduction, Stilton Blue Cheese with Wild Mushroom Aioli.” Wow. It was a really good burger. Better than most places I've had to travel further for. It also came with a lot of garlic fries. Next time I go here, and I will, I want to check out what else they had. But KP spotted a burger on the menu and my brain paused right there.

Nachos, Ice Cream, and Shrimp

It was a day of bad service. KP and I went to Hollywood and Highland and stumbled into the premiere of Fast & Furious 7. Had no idea it was happening since we didn't go to Dave & Buster's because Van Halen was performing the two previous days. I know this sounds all made up but its not. After we dodged $30 parking we walked into a Ludacris concert. What is happening?! Anyhoot, we headed to D&B's eventually and waited a forever just to get drinks and order our food. This place wasn't busy by any stretch of the imagination. I got nachos that allegedly had beef. I saw none. But it had plenty of beans! KP got calamari but it was a whole lot of fried onions and pepperoncini which I had no idea was spelled that way. Okay-ish food. Bad service. Slow staff. Will only go back to play games which was awesome. That Kung Fu Panda game ain't no joke!

Sliders & Sushi

I went on a mini food tour with KP the other day while we were at LACMA getting all cultured and shit. After part of the first exhibit both of our stomachs were playing their own version of dueling banjos so we headed across the way to check out all the food trucks. I got some sliders from this one called Home Run Sliders.

These were really good but it sucks that they were out of truffle fries. Its not like we were super late getting there or something. They were just out. KP got a five cheese grilled sandwich from another truck that she really liked.

Spare Tire On Wilshire

So after the nightmare of eating Hiatus and buying plants we parked and I asked Cam where that other food place she mentioned was. She pointed across the street to Spare Tire and I said “Let's go!” So we went there with no reservations because we G's like that. Immediately seated new the brick pizza oven.

Order an Allagash white because that drink is the shit while Cam got some weird coconut beer thing. She liked it. I ordered the chicken and waffles plate which you can see looks crazy but tasted great. It had basel butter on top and the chicken was awesome. She got a prawn meal but didn't like them that much but enjoyed everything else on her plate. This place definitely picked up our moods after the last place. There are quite a few other things on their menu that look good that I'll have to try out. The waiter was cool and not pushy at all. The food was good. The music was cool. I liked this place a lot. For anyone wondering how we could eat two meals in less than an hour, fifteen minutes after eating the first place it was like we had nothing.

Hiatus Urban Barbecue

Tonight Cam and I planned to head somewhere to eat. There were three choices and when she mentioned the word “barbecue” I had to go with that option. There is a place called Hiatus Urban BBQ. Yelp reviews looked really good and it wasn't far from Cam so, fuck it, lets go.

What a bad idea this turned out to be.

I am gonna say what was good about this place. The guy behind the counter with the white hair and blue eyes. Very nice and knew about all of the food he was serving. I got the Moo something which had beef and horseradish. Way too much horseradish. The bread was whole wheat and when I opened up the container it looked like someone had elbow dropped it. It was ugly and tasted funky. I don't know what urban barbecue is but if this is it they can keep it. I'll stick with Bludsoe's.

Chip Taste Test

Camille gave me three bags of chips the other day because she loves me. She has a blog where she rates beers and chips called Potato Chips & Beer which you can check out by clicking all up in that link. The flavors she gave me were Lays Bacon & Cheddar Cheese, Lays Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger, and Lays Wavy Mango Salsa. I am washing these down with Sprite because the flavor isn't too strong and doesn't interfere with this test.

Lays Bacon & Cheddar Cheese

Smell: Slightly like sour cream and cheddar.

Look: Light skinned barbecue Lays.

Taste: Kinda like bacon but mostly like weak cheese. This isn't bad at all but since it has bacon it should taste like bacon. If you have these you can't drink anything because the flavor isn't strong enough to compliment anything.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Project Taco

Today me and my cousin JP went to this place called Project Taco over on Wilshire near Crescent Heights. This place is bigger than it looks from pictures I saw online. We had to park around the corner which makes sense when you consider its off of Wilshire. That street is a nightmare. So we get there are translating the street signs and head inside.

The line moves pretty face and there are some long tables with Jenga games on them. I suck at that game so I didn't even try and touch it. We got there during their lunch special which had two tacos, a side, and a drink. JP got the apple kale coleslaw but didn't like it that much while I got the chips with a salsa that was great. Forget what kind it even was bit it was really good. JP ended up getting the same which they replaced for free which was cool of them. I must say that the staff there was really cool as well. Now on to the tacos.

So Much Continental Kitchen

I ended up going to Continental Kitchen three times in three days. I took my cousin J. for the first time as well as my cousin Mala. I then grabbed some and took it over Cam's. I love this place and they have been good consistently.

Vees Cafe On Adams

A couple of weeks ago after a hike we all went to this place called Vees Cafe on Adams Blvd. I was hesitant when the location was mentioned. We tried to go to another spot on Adams first but it was packed and too small so we went here. I had no idea this place even existed but it turned out to be really good. I got an omelet that had avocado and bacon that turned out to be turkey bacon but still good. There was also the potatoes and the jam for the toast. I'd head to this place again for sure. And the caramel latte was super good. I managed to finish that big ass thing.

Panini Cafe Breakfast

A few days ago Cam and I headed to Panini Cafe over on 3rd and Crescent Heights for breakfast. We got there at 10am and it was the perfect time. Finding parking was easy and there wasn't any crazies in the street besides the drivers on the road. Seriously. Just sitting there you can watch near accidents for an hour. The staff at this place is always nice and the service is pretty damned fast.

I got a scrambled omelet with chicken sausage and vegetables with a glass of fresh orange juice. Oh, and sourdough bread and potatoes. Cam got an omelet with tea. It was a very relaxing breakfast before heading out to check out a few movies for the day.

Continental Kitchen Hot Dog

I went to the Continental Kitchen again the other day and decided to try one of their hotdogs. I don't eat them often and I was sure that whatever this place made it would be good. I was correct! This monster was very filling and came with their magic fries that taste perfect. The all beef hotdog came with lettuce and tomato as well as pickle.

The next time I go to this place I am gonna eat there because both times I picked my food up it was very comfy looking inside. The staff here is nice and when they give you a time to pick up your food it is just coming out of the kitchen and hot. I am waiting for the chance to take one of my friends here so they can see that it is as good as I have been saying.

Continental Kitchen

I just discovered a new place to get food that is less than a minute from my home, is not expensive, and tastes amazing. It is called Continental Kitchen and it is located in the same spot as Tasty Donuts on Santa Monica Blvd.

I originally called Philly Steak Depot and after three minutes of trying to tell the lady on the phone my address before she finally told me they don't deliver here (they do) I checked for burgers in West Hollywood. When I saw the address I thought that either the information had not been updated or that it was flat out wrong. Nope. Turns out I was that close to great food.

The food was ready in 15 minutes (I called it in). I walked over there and was mad that I've passed this place so many times. It is really comfy looking inside and the staff was nice. I grabbed my food which was way cheaper than I was expecting. For this big burger, these strange delicious fries, and a fresh smoothie it was $15. They have all kinds of food. Not just burgers. They have liquor, fresh everything, a juice bar, coffee, and serve breakfast/lunch/dinner. I have to say that this burger was very fresh tasting. It took years for me to know the difference when I ate somewhere and this place has fresh burgers. If you are in the area you need to go here.

Tasty Donuts and Cafe Is Good Again!

Tasty Donuts and Cafe in West Hollywood is back and good again. A while back I wrote about how the usual workers weren't there and the quality dropped a lot. Now they are in a new location that is a block closer to me and the old employees are back plus some new ones that actually give a damn. I haven't seen any of those ones that sucked that I mentioned before. They have added new flavors like this cronut which is awesome. They have bacon maple donuts, too. See, I first had one at Glazed but that place no longer exists because reasons. I have gone back to Tasty since they have reopened a few times and every time I've liked what they've made. They are back to their early 2000's version of good products and that makes me so happy. Hell. I think I'm gonna head there in a few minutes now.
