This past weekend my lady and I went to a lot of places to eat. It was ridiculous. The first place we went to was Ocean Prime in Beverly Hills. This was part of a Dine LA deal which is why we tried it and I would for sure go back. For appetizers I got an onion soup which was really good. She got a lobster bisque that she liked. For drinks we got booze that had no actual booze in it. I just wanted to try it out. It tasted like it had gin in it but did not which was so strange to experience.
Edit: My lady has pointed out that the drinks DID have gin but it was zero proof.
For meals I got a steak which tasted great. The seasoning was all the way through which is something I look for when I get steak not at home. She got a salmon dish she thought was just okay and not a fan of some of the things added (she hates sprouts) and too much sauce on the bed of rice.
Location: Its in Beverly Hills so chances are you will have to use a parking lot. Parking is not too far from the place and you just have to dodge tourist on the sidewalks.
Price: It was part of Dine LA so the price was less but from what I saw on the regular parts of the menu the prices are about the same as other places that my cheap ass thinks are expensive.
Service: Service was just okay. Guy filling up water was on the ball. My lady was mad that we were not offered any of the bread that others were getting. Hoping it was just because Dine LA doesn't include it and not just bad service.
The next place we went to was before we went to see Some Like It Hot at Pantages Theater was Northern Cafe. We almost got burgers but walked down a few more shops and headed into this place. We got dumplings we ate before we took pictures and shared a Mongolian beef dish that was enough for both of us. It tasted good and was just the right amount of food for the both of us.
Location: Its Hollywood so if you are lucky you will find street parking that expires by 8pm. Otherwise you are leaving a car in a shady lot that you don't wanna walk to later at night dodging all manner of hobo. One shouted something I won't repeat that baffled me more than I've been baffled in a very long time.
Price: Very decent price for the amount of food that we got. Would definitely go back here again.
Service: Very good service and nice staff. I liked them.
The next day we went to Zarape. We meant to go to Marix but they weren't open so instead of walking around or figuring something else we went to this place that I have seen for years but never had a desire to try. Now I know why. My lady got a Caesar salad and I got three little tacos. We also had some salsas that were nothing to write home about. The tacos were literally just okay. They are way better at Guisado's. I never need to go back to this place.
Location: Like a four minute walk from me. Its WeHo so you will have to deal with hobos and crazy drivers and people on bikes in a very short amount of time. The place itself is in its own super tiny lot.
Price: They outta be ashamed to charge as much as they do for those tiny tacos and salad. They acted surprised that we just ordered what we did and no drinks. This place cost far more than it should.
Service: Very. Very. Slow. I was expecting some bomb ass dishes for how long it took for the stuff to finally show up.
The last place we went to and most disappointing was Marix. Click the tab on this page and see how many times I have been here. It had been closed for like five years and I was so excited to finally not just get to go back but take my lady since I have been talking about it for years. There was one particular dish I was looking forward to having. Guess what? They no longer even have it. The Cubano is gone!!! I was so damned bummed out. I almost got a burger. We got there around 7pm (they are open from 5 to 11) and had a 45 minute wait. 10 minutes later after we walked away to kill some time they texted us to return...and sit outside for another half hour. We sat outside because it was far too loud inside. Sadly the group that sat near us was loud and obnoxious and then a dude with his dog showed up. I ended up getting a steak that was 90% fat, unflavored rice, beans I didn't touch, and salty enchiladas. I'm not a fan of enchiladas but these were okay. My lady got enchiladas as well. Oh, and unlimited salsa and chips. We also got a couple of Marix margaritas that were good.
Location: Same as Zarape. Its literally up the street from me.
Price: Seems more expensive but that isn't true. I was just more willing to pay a lot for really good food five years ago.
Service: Our waiters were fine. No problem with them. They don't control what stays or goes on the menu.
